About The Institute

Our Mission

The mission of the Los Angeles TMS Institute (LATMS) is to help people with neuropsychiatric disorders to recover from their conditions and regain joy and meaning in their lives. We do this by employing the most advanced and innovative brain treatments, administered empathically by experienced, skilled providers.

Our Services

We focus on offering the best treatments using (1) TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (including Theta Burst Stimulation, cleared by the U.S. FDA in 2018) and (2) ketamine, a medication that has been shown by researchers to be therapeutic for treatment resistant depression and other conditions.

As well, we provide expert, second opinion consultations. Having "fresh eyes" on a patient's situation can lead to valuable insights and new treatment options, especially when co-existing psychiatric and medical conditions add to the complexity of helping a patient regain wellness.

Our History

The Los Angeles TMS Institute was founded by Ian A Cook MD, an internationally-recognized master clinician, translational neuroscientist, and innovator.

Dr. Cook was a Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA (the University of California, Los Angeles) for over twenty years, where he focused on innovation in advanced treatments and diagnostic tools for depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders.

He founded the UCLA Depression Research & Clinic program in 2007 and the TMS Treatment Service in 2009, becoming the first physician at any University of California campus to treat depression with TMS. In 2008, he was awarded an endowed chair, the Joanne and George Miller & Family Chair in Depression Research, at the UCLA Brain Research Institute. He was elected Chair of the Faculty of the David Geffen School of Medicine and served as Chief of Staff at the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. He was also a Professor of Bioengineering at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA, and is an inventor of over three dozen patents on biomedical devices, many of which UCLA has licensed for development.

He served for 14 years on the Steering Committee on Practice Guidelines of the American Psychiatric Association, supporting the practice of evidence-based medicine in psychiatry. He serves as an editor of the APA's FOCUS journal and was elected a Distinguished Fellow of that organization. He was elected President of the West Coast College of Biological Psychiatry. He was tapped by Thomas Insel, MD, then Director of the National Institute on Mental Health, to become a standing member of the NIH integrated review group focusing on advancing research in psychiatric interventions.

He has served on the Board of Directors of the Clinical TMS Society since 2013, and currently chairs the Legal, Business, and Ethics Committee. He has taught about brain stimulation internationally as well as in the U.S.; he was one of the four faculty teaching the Master Class on TMS at the 2018 American Psychiatric Association meeting, and again in 2019, and he is Course Chair for the 2020 Annual Meeting program.

In 2018, Dr. Cook decided to leave his tenured faculty appointment at UCLA and establish the LA TMS Institute, to more effectively pursue his vision of a center dedicated to providing the best in advanced treatments to patients.

As a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Bioengineering at UCLA, Dr. Cook continues to contribute to the University's research mission through collaborations and its educational mission by teaching future generations of physicians and engineers.

Our Practice

LATMS does not participate in Medicare, Medi-cal or any other insurance plans. As such, we are considered an out of network provider. Patients pay LATMS directly for care, and we are happy to provide you with a billing statement ("superbill") periodically, which you can submit to your insurance plan for reimbursement consideration. This lets us focus all our resources on providing you with the best possible options for care.

Please contact the office in order to discuss fees.

Dr. Cook

Dr. Cook received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and earned his M.D. degree at the Yale School of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry training at UCLA's Neuropsychiatric Institute & Hospital (now the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA) and an NIH-funded T32 research fellowship in psychobiology at UCLA before joining the full-time faculty. While Dr. Cook was running the TMS program at UCLA, he was featured in this YouTube Video which presents a patient's perspective on TMS, using the approaches to treatment that were the best practices in 2010.
